Holly Willoughby blasted as she ‘sympathises’ with Just Stop Oil after Glastonbury helicopter

This Morning star Holly Willoughby was today accused of talking ‘hypocritical sanctimonious tripe’ by furious viewers as she revealed her sympathy for Just Stop Oil eco-clowns – just a week after she chartered a helicopter 136 miles from London to Glastonbury.

The ITV star was discussing the climate change group’s latest infuriating stunt – when they twice invaded Wimbledon’s Court 18 and threw orange confetti and jigsaw puzzle pieces in the space of two hours – when she made the confession.

Just Stop Oil have sparked fury by causing chaos at a string of sporting events in recent weeks, including at the Ashes and the Gallagher Premiership rugby final.

Willoughby was recently at the centre of a controversy which began over her alleged backstage feud with Phillip Schofield and culminated in her co-star being axed from This Morning. Schofield later dramatically resigned from ITV after admitting lying to the Mail on Sunday over his affair with a colleague.

Willoughby’s guest, LBC presenter Nick Ferrari, told her: ‘A lot of my listeners have said: ”Please don’t cover Just Stop Oil”’. She then responded: ‘But then you look, we had the hottest day globally on record…’

Ferrari said: ‘We have got a massive problem. Those spectators, what are they meant to do? All that has happened is their afternoon has been disrupted. We don’t make the decisions, so what are we going to do? You disrupt the cricket, the rugby…’

Willoughby replied: ‘I know, I understand. But I guess their hope is someone higher up will make a difference.’

Her comments sparked a social media backlash among This Morning viewers, with one thundering: ‘Holly saying she understands Just Stop Oil because of the climate crisis but happy to take a helicopter to Glastonbury, hypocritical sanctimonious tripe.’

Another added: ‘Just listened to This Morning where the hypocrite Holly Willoughby defended just stop oil telling us that we had the hottest global temperatures he other day and we must do something…what like fly to Glaso in a helicopter. They are laughing at us all.

British number one Katie Boulter was left ‘shocked’ and ‘worried’ when the Just Stop Oil activist stormed the Wimbledon court where she was playing, flinging jigsaw pieces and confetti onto the ground.

The disruptive protester, named by the group as William John Ward, ran onto court 18 at 4.25pm as Boulter played her match against Australia’s Daria Saville where he was met with boos and jeers from the frustrated crowd before being dragged off the court by security.

It calls into question the strict airport-style checks that caused 10-hour queues for tennis fans had their bags searched extensively, with some also having their bodies searched at the gates.

Boulter, 26, was seen crouched on the floor with a towel over her as she helped clear up the mess alongside the ball boys and while another member of Wimbledon staff was seen running onto the court with a vacuum cleaner.

Play eventually resumed seeing Boulter overcome her rival despite the disruption in her first round-match. She will now advance to the second round of the tournament.

Speaking after her victory, the tennis star said she had been worried when the chaos had broken out as ‘you never know what it is’.

The Policing Minister today urged spectators at major sporting events to ‘do a Jonny Bairstow’ and stop Just Stop Oil eco-clowns from interrupting play – after zealots targeted Wimbledon yesterday.

Home Office minister Chris Philp agreed that fans could intervene in the way the England cricketer last week picked up a climate change activist and carried him off the field at Lord’s.

But he added that ‘nobody should do anything dangerous or hurt anyone’ – and insisted it was firstly the job of stewards and marshals to step in to deal with demonstrations. Mr Philp also said anyone who intervenes should be ‘reasonable’. He spoke out today after it was revealed the Government had told Wimbledon officials and police that they can ‘use force, without it being excessive and where appropriate’.

This comes as Just Stop Oil donor Dale Vince warned the eco-mob will continue to disrupt ‘high-profile’ sports which are on the group’s ‘target list’.

The multi-millionaire, who is the owner of British energy company Ecotricity, told the Guardian that protestors will continue to target sporting events on the big stage in order to grab headlines.

He said that the ‘most effective protest is a disruptive one’ and he believes ‘a few minutes delay at a sporting event really is nothing’ compared to the number of people who are losing their lives to climate change.

Vince’s comments, which were reportedly made before the protests at Wimbledon yesterday when eco-zealots stormed Court 18 and disrupted play twice in two hours, come before the start of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend.

Managing Director of Silverstone Stuart Pringle said earlier this week there is a ‘high likelihood of serious injury or death’ if similar protests are carried out at the F1 event and urged people ‘not to be so stupid’.

Today Just Stop Oil subjected frustrated commuters to another morning of traffic misery and delays after staging another slow march in central London.

The lobby group, which aims to pressure the government into abandoning fossil fuels once and for all, is partway through a six-week campaign of disruption in the capital.

The police was called to stop slow marches in Blackfriars Road and Tower Bridge, as activists in groups of just four people forced cars into a grinding halt.

One man in a white van was filmed shouting ‘get out of the road’ as traffic sped past a gang of activists.

Meanwhile a veteran eco-warrior who gained fame for his climate change protests has rejected the tactics used by Just Stop Oil, claiming instead that the ‘time has come to bring communities together’.

Swampy, whose real name is Daniel Hooper, says that while the protesters who disrupt traffic or sporting events are ‘obviously brave and passionate’, he thinks real change will come from working with people from ‘different walks of life’.

Mr Hooper, 50, has joined the Climate Majority Project (CMP), which rejects the disruptive methods used by JSO and Extinction Rebellion and instead focuses on promoting action in politics.
