Susanna Reid takes a swipe at Richard Madeley as he returns to GMB after eight week break

He’s been on break from Good Morning Britain for the past eight weeks.

And Susanna Reid couldn’t resist making a sly dig at Richard Madeley upon his return to the ITV show on Tuesday.

Speaking on his time off, Richard, 66, said: ‘Has this place shrunk since I’ve been away? It’s smaller!’

Pointing at the desk, he said: ‘They expanded it for Covid didn’t they? We had to expand it for miles and miles.’

Susanna, 51, shot back: ‘Despite my insistence we carry on sitting miles and miles apart they have brought us closer together.’

Richard replied: ‘I thought you’d be against it. You like your little bubble, don’t you…’

Susanna agreed saying: ‘I do, I like holding everyone at arms’ length.’

In an attempt to diffuse the tension, Susanna reached out to pat Richard’s shoulder.

She said: ‘Anyway, it’s nice to have you back.’

Richard recoiled and said: ‘Oh blimey, we can actually touch…’

Susanna corrected: ‘Just a shoulder tap.’ 

Richard went on to explain his absence from the show, revealing he was busy writing his novel. 

He said: ‘I was finishing my novel and I just couldn’t do this show and finish the novel at the same time. I’ve done it and now I’m back.’

Susanna said: ‘So you’ve given up life for the early shifts.

‘Well, it’s absolutely lovely to have you back.’

She then offered her congratulations to him for becoming a grandfather after his daughter Chloe gave birth to a daughter named Bodhi over the summer.
