Russell Crowe has revealed he had major reservations about acting in his 2000 hit movie Gladiator, branding the script as ‘absolute rubbish’.
The Poker Face star, 59, told Vanity Fair he thought it had several confusing scenes which didn’t make sense and was worried it would confuse audiences.
‘At the core of what we were doing was a great concept, but the script was absolute rubbish. It had all sorts of strange sequences,’ he told the publication.
‘The audience are gonna go, “What the f**k is this?”. The energy around what we were doing was very fractured.’
He admitted it was director Ridley Scott, 85, who convinced him to do it, ensuring him they wouldn’t film anything Crowe didn’t ‘100% believe in’.

It comes after Crowe revealed he would love to play an Australian Prime Minister in a biopic.
The New Zealand-born actor told Sky News Australia he would be keen to bring the life of Gough Whitlam to the big screen.

‘I think he was one of Australia’s great statesmen. I think he set things in place that give us the confidence we have as a nation today,’ he said.
Crowe praised Whitlam’s purchase of the painting Blue Poles by Jackson Pollock, which he acquired for the National Gallery of Australia in 1973 for what was a record price at the time – $1.3 million.
‘You know, little decisions that he made, like buying blue poles, the painting. And everybody just castigated him at the time and called him irresponsible,’ Crowe said.
‘At the core of what we were doing was a great concept, but the script was absolute rubbish. It had all sorts of strange sequences,’ he said
‘That painting is worth $500 million now or something… every government decision should have that result. You know, you get a 500 multiple out of every single dollar you spend and we’d be in a great place.’
The Gladiator star went on to say that the country is ‘lucky’ to now have Anthony Albanese as leader, who he sees as a down to earth guy.
The pair have known one another for 20 years via the South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league club, which the actor part-owns.
