Colin Farrell looks unrecognisable with facial prosthetics as he continues to film The Penguin

This actor is known for his chiseled look and Irish charm, but looked strikingly different on Thursday as he continued filming for new series The Penguin,

That’s right, it’s Colin Farrell! The 46-year-old star looked unrecognisable as he filmed in New York City, transforming his look to fit into the titular crime lord role.

He is reprising his role from 2022 blockbuster The Batman, with the first look at the character released last week as the series prepares to air on the rebranded streaming service Max (formerly HBO Max).

Filming scenes alongside co-star Cristin Milioti, the Golden Globe winner appeared worlds away from his usually chiselled look while wearing a face of prosthetics for the role – which added facial scars and a receding hairline.

He donned a cream tailored suit over a burgundy shirt, the ensemble was finished off with glossy black shoes as Colin looked strikingly different.

Co-star Cristin – who plays the daughter of Gotham crime boss Carmine Falcone, played by John Turturro in The Batman – was alongside him as she smoked a cigarette.

She sported a longline coat in a midnight blue with a pair of black court heels, with her raven locks left in a natural style as she got into character as Sofia Falcone.

The series will continue the story began in director Matt Reeves’ The Batman, showing the full transformation of Oswald Cobbelpot to the notorious criminal who would become known as The Penguin.

This month, the first teaser trailer for the DC villain spin-off was released, capturing Colin in character as The Penguin, shooting foes with a laugh and dubbing himself the ‘new kingpin of Gotham.’

The hair-raising clip begins with him musing, ‘This is one of those moments. You ask yourself, what kind of life do I want? The world ain’t built for guys like us. That’s why we gotta take whatever we decide as ours.’

The trailer appears to show The Penguin in the midst of a power struggle, as he manages to resist an attempted stabbing after discussing fellow Gotham mobster Carmine Falcone.

Running for eight-episodes, the series was first announced in March 2022, just days after The Batman to a whopping $134 million debut at the box office, en route to $369.3 million domestic and $770.9 million worldwide.

The series was given a straight-to-series order, written by Lauren LeFranc who will also serve as the showrunner.

It also stars Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Deirdre O’Connell, with Clancy Brown and Michael Zegen recurring.

The show is based on characters created for DC by Bob Kane with Bill Finger.

Colin recently told Variety that he was not aware of a potential miniseries about the villainous character while making the 2022 film, but knew there was ample material to work with creatively and aesthetically.

‘The only thing I had an idea was that I wasn’t nearly getting to explore the character as much as I wanted to,’ he said. ‘Because there was all this extraordinary work done by Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine and his team, and I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun, that we were getting to do the six or seven scenes that we did in the film. I was grateful for them, but I wanted more.’

Colin said that his transformation into The Penguin is what convinced The Batman producer Dylan Clark to bring the project to life.

‘Honest to god, any thought I had about an extended series was to do with Mike Marino’s work,’ he told the outlet. ‘I just knew there was so much to do with it — age it up, age it down.

‘He’s just such a genius, Mike, so it was his work that was the inspiration, really.’
