Tess Daly discusses her attitude towards ageing and being on television in her 50s

Tess Daly has candidly discussed her attitude towards ageing and the pressure put on physical appearances in the modelling industry.

The TV presenter, 53, admitted she thinks she has got ‘wrinkles galore’ but said she wouldn’t change her appearance as she reflected on reaching her 50s.

Tess hosts Strictly Come Dancing alongside Claudia Winkleman, 51, and said there are more women over the age of 50 now presenting on TV than in years gone by.

She insisted she has no intention of stepping down and said she is ‘grateful’ to still be healthy and working as she spoke about her ‘pragmatic’ attitude towards ageing.

She told The Sun: ‘I’ve got wrinkles galore, you know when you look down at your iPhone and the camera is open and you go: “Oh, my god!” I’m at that point – but what’s the alternative?’

Tess went on to say that she doesn’t see any point in beating herself up over things and said she simply tries to be grateful for her life instead.

However, she did admit that she can sometimes be over critical of herself and focus on her faults, saying she has ‘hated’ her nose since she was just 15 years old.

She said: ‘I broke it playing netball, I hate my profile, I’d love to change it, but I wouldn’t dare in case it just looked worse afterwards.’

Tess also looked back on her early career as a model and candidly spoke about the pressure put on women’s appearances in the industry.

She admitted that though dieting was never an option for her, coming from a family who never skipped meals, she saw many friends ‘sabotage’ their health by restricting their food.

But Tess admitted she was told to change the way she looked as a model but learnt to take it with ‘a pinch of salt’ after hearing many conflicting opinions on her appearance.

She said: ‘I was told so many times: “You should look this way,” then I was told: ‘You should put weight on.’ I thought: “You said something different to me last month”, that’s when I realised to just take it with a pinch of salt.’

Tess – who is a mother to daughters Phoebe, 18, and Amber, 13 – went on to describe the added pressure that social media puts on teenagers today.

She admitted it is ‘sad’ to see that young people now don’t have a carefree spirit because everything is documented on social media, meaning they can’t make mistakes.

Tess, who is married to Vernon Kay, said she doesn’t discuss looks with her two daughters, admitting she doesn’t want to put any more pressure on them.

She said she believes character is more important than appearances because ‘looks will fade’ whereas personality lasts forever.

Tess’s latest comments come after her lookalike daughter Phoebe made her red carpet debut with her father Vernon at the John Wick Chapter 4 premiere.

Phoebe looked stylish in a white draped shirt with a pair of shiny black pleather trousers with split hems.

The blonde beauty toted her essentials in a black studded handbag and accessorised with several chain bracelets and a gold pair of earrings.

Meanwhile, her father Vernon, 48, cut a suave figure as he posed for photos in a navy blue jacket.

He teamed his ensemble with dark blue jeans and a matching roll-neck jumper and dark blue shoes.

Vernon recently said he doesn’t want his children to live off his and wife Tess’s fame, insisting they form ‘their own careers’.

He told MailOnline he’s currently looking at drama schools to send Phoebe to where she can combine her passions for acting and business.

Unlike some showbiz couples, Vernon says himself and Tess believe it’s important for their offspring ‘to find themselves’ and not be given their ‘life on a plate’, crediting the pair’s Northern backgrounds for shaping their parenting beliefs.

Vernon said: ‘We let them be independent when it comes to them and their futures because it’s important that you allow them to find themselves, which is character building and personality development.

‘Sometimes I think that the old silver spoon and life on a plate in front of them… I think that’s quite contradictory to how you want them to be.

‘Tess and I grew up in hearty, wholesome Northern families and that’s a huge trait that helped us in our personal development and I think that’s really important.’

He added: ‘I don’t disagree with anyone that does that by helping their kids, which is great, but I just think sometimes for us, personally, it’s whatever they’re into, they can go and discover themselves.’
