Jena Malone reveals she was sexually assaulted while shooting the Hunger Games films

Jena Malone revealed that she had been sexually assaulted while filming the Hunger Games series in an Instagram post from Wednesday.

The post, which included a sun-drenched photo of her taken in the French countryside after wrapping on the popular dystopian film series, featured a lengthy caption detailing the difficult time in her life.

The 38-year-old actress — who came out as pansexual last year — steered clear of naming the person who allegedly assaulted her, as they had engaged in ‘restorative justice’ to heal to help her heal.

Malone was featured in the Hunger Games sequels Catching Fire and the two-part Mockingjay as Johanna Mason.

DailyMail.com has reached out to Malone’s representatives for comment.

In her yellow-tinted photo, she sported dyed blond hair and wore a denim jacket while standing amid a field of swaying wheat and gazing into the camera.

‘This photo was taken right after I wrapped mocking Jay part two and I had to say goodbye to everyone on set,’ she began, after adding a ‘trigger warning’ to her followers.

‘We were shooting in a beautiful estate in the countryside of France and I asked the driver to let me out in this field so I could cry and capture this moment,’ she continued. ‘Even tho this time in Paris was extremely hard for me , was going thru a bad break up and also was sexually assaulted by someone I had worked with , I was so full of gratitude for this project, the people I became close with and this amazing part I got to play [sic].’

She called the events ‘a swirling mix of emotions’ that she was ‘only now just learning to sort thru [sic].’

‘I wish it wasn’t tied to such a traumatic event for me but that is the real wildness of life I I guess. How to hold the chaos with the beauty,’ Malone wrote.

She added more detail about the assault, claiming she and the person who assaulted her had found a way to move on privately, rather than getting police involved.

‘I’ve worked very hard to heal and learn thru restorative justice , how to make peace with the person who violated me and make peace with myself. It’s been hard to talk about the hunger games and [her character] Johanna Mason without feeling the sharpness of this moment in time but I’m ready to move thru it and reclaim the joy and accomplishment I felt [sic],’ she wrote.

Restorative justice is a process that excludes the criminal justice system and instead brings the victim of a crime face-to-face with the perpetator. The victim can share how the crime affected them while detailing steps that the perpetrator can take to right the wrongs, which can take many different forms.

The goal of the approach is to put victims in charge of the response to the crime, and it focuses on their healing, rather than simply punishing the perpetrator, which advocates say is the standard approach of the criminal justice system.

Malone ended her post by sharing ‘lots of love to you survivors out there.’

‘There process is so slow and non linear. I want to say im here for anyone who needs to talk or vent or open uncommunicated spaces within themselves,’ she wrote, while offering that people could send her messages if necessary.

In the comments, one user complained that the person who sexually assaulted her ‘got to walk away with no repercussions,’ which she pushed back on in a reply.

‘That’s not true. I used restorative justice to allow healing and accountability and growth with the other person,’ she replied. ‘It was a hard process but one I believe truly helped me move thru some of the hardest parts of the grief.’

In another reply, she added that she hadn’t named the person due to ‘cancel culture,’ suggesting that she didn’t want to drag their name through the mud after they had atoned to her.

Malone added that she didn’t ‘fully see how the criminal justice system could fully repair my healing.’

Although she described her assailant as someone she had ‘worked with,’ she didn’t clarify if it was on one of the Hunger Games films or another project

Jena, who began her career as a child actress in the mid-1990s, had a troubled early career that saw her win emancipation from her mother when she was just 15, after claiming that the money she earned from acting had been mismanaged.

After getting an early start in high-profile films including Contact, Stepmom and the cult classic Donnie Darko, Malone focused mostly on acclaimed indie and art films, though she still regularly appears in bigger-budget fare.

Her next big project will see her reuniting with director Zack Snyder, who she worked with on Sucker Punch and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

She will be featured in a supporting role in his space opera Rebel Moon, along with Sofia Boutellz, Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Hopkins and the Game Of Thrones stars Ed Skrein and Michiel Huisman.

She is currently filming Kevin Costner’s Western film Horizon.
