Idris Elba plans to turn Luther into ‘its own film franchise’

He’s downplayed suggestions that he could be the next James Bond but Idris Elba is determined to turn crime thriller Luther into a series of big-budget films.

At the world premiere of the new Netflix film Luther: The Fallen Sun, he tells me: ‘My hope is that Luther can become its own franchise now and that we duplicate it and make more stories and take it slightly bigger.’

The Hackney-born star, 50, also used the premiere at the BFI IMAX in Waterloo to apologise to his wife, model Sabrina for his time playing troubled detective John Luther. ‘I know I turn into a complete w***** when I’m playing John but she still loves me.’

Elba stars alongside Cynthia Erivo in the forthcoming film, and the one-time 007 in waiting admitted it was an honour to finally work with the former Bond girl.

He said: ‘Cynthia was amazing to work with, she’s an incredible actor and I’ve been a fan for a long time, and now I’m even more of a fan as she came in and embodied this character.’

The actor returns in the big-screen continuation of the TV series, and hopes the character can take up some of 007’s ‘real estate’.

But the gritty new movie, which features Andy Serkis as cyber serial killer David Robey, has so far been panned by critic after its Netflix release last week.

Elba, who has often been tipped to play Bond, told Magic Radio: ‘The Bond series is an incredible staple to the UK and the world right, but Luther could take up some of that real estate.

‘It is not about espionage, but it is about how to catch them. I think Luther tends to be a little bit more relatable, you know grounded.

‘You know guys that creep from under your bed… this film has certainly taken it a little more cyber if you like with Andy Serkis’s character.’

Elba thinks the Luther movie has been ‘a long time coming’ and is already planning for the future on the big screen.

The Beasts of No Nation star said: ‘Hopefully it is the beginning of the new chapter. Sounds corny, but you know we have gone from television, we have gone as far as we can and now, we have got the world as our stage. Big epic landscapes and you know infinite stories.’

Elba also explained that he wants to star in a musical next despite his experience on the ill-fated 2019 adaptation of ‘Cats’.

The star said: ‘I would love to do a musical. I started off, my first semi-professional job was ‘Guys and Dolls’ and I played Big Jule and I loved it. And I was the understudy for Sky Masterson, so I did the whole singing and dancing number, and I loved it.’

Meanwhile, on Heart Radio, Elba said it’s ‘the biggest compliment’ to have his name attached to James Bond but admits the role of Luther is all he’s ‘wanting to do’.

He said: ‘It is one of the biggest compliments I can ever get as an actor. You know, the role of Bond is such a coveted role and to be considered for it is amazing, but honestly, I always secretly felt that Luther is my answer to that.
