Peter Kay, 49, assisted a fan in pulling off a surprise on-stage proposal during his recent Birmingham gig (with the comedian dressed as Santa for the special moment).

On December 17, Steve Drury, 53, popped the question to Stephanie Mann, 55, in front of a packed out crowd at the Utilita Arena, after Peter Kay agreed to help create the heartwarming engagement.

Steve – who met his now-fiancée four years ago – sent a note to Peter before the show began, and the comedian gamely agreed to play along.

The couple were then called up on stage under the guise of doing karaoke, allowing Steve to propose in front of the crowd.

The Norwich-based delivery worker said: ‘[Stephanie] was so shocked she didn’t say ‘yes’ straight away – Peter had to prompt her.

‘That was a bit scary but the whole thing was fantastic. So many people congratulated us and offered selfies.’

Steve had wanted to propose for a while but couldn’t think of the right moment – until he secured tickets for the Peter Kay gig gig. 

Telling legal secretary Stephanie he was going to the loo, Steve found an usher who passed the note to the comedian.

Steve said his nerves grew as the show progressed – especially as Stephanie had always joked she wanted a ‘big’ proposal.

He said: ‘I was very nervous as we walked round the back of the stage. Peter was reading out my letter and Steph didn’t know what was going on. I had to keep talking so she wouldn’t hear him.

‘I told her we were doing karaoke. She’s a lovely voice but she looked terrified when he handed us both a microphone.’

Luckily mum-of-two Stephanie regained her composure and said ‘yes’ – with the couple are looking forward to the big day.

Dad-of-one Steve said: ‘It was amazing! We had a fantastic time – so many people congratulated us and asked for selfies.

‘Peter’s so funny and I like a bit of a joke. I just knew it would be great to propose there.’

Stephanie told BirminghamLive: ‘We had a really lovely weekend and to get engaged like we did is something I will always remember.

‘It was so nice of Peter to let us up on to the stage because, after all, people have paid to see him, not us.

‘I felt so honoured and he gave me a peck of a kiss, too – which Steve didn’t get!’

Not so much a comeback as a resurrection. That is certainly how it felt last night among the truest of the true believers as Peter Kay returned to the big stage in his native North West eleven years after his previous tour came to an end.

With jokes about Eighties-era adverts, crisps, grandparents, Northern comedy clubs and a smattering of smut, the phenomenally popular Bolton-born comedian launched into a new show which has already sold out venues across Britain throughout next year and beyond.

Last night’s full-house at Manchester’s 02 Arena gave him a standing ovation before he could utter a single word. Kay’s last tour, scheduled for 2017, had been cancelled due to ‘unforeseen family reasons’. I spotted one or two in tears – as was Kay himself for a few moments. ‘How am I supposed to do comedy after that?’ he exclaimed – and then did.

Fans talked of their delight at not merely getting through the lottery of the online ticketing process but also landing seats for the prized first night. ‘It was just pure luck. I had planned to aim for a later date as I thought the first night would be impossible,’ said Chris Wraight, part of a thrilled group of six from Crewe.

At the end of Peter Kay’s previous tour, which spanned 122 dates during 2010-11, Guinness World Record announced that he had set a new record for the most popular stand-up comedy tour in history – one that was watched by 1.2 million people.

Given the general reaction last night and the new schedule of gigs stretching out as far as 2025, Kay must be confident of beating his own record with this one.
