October was first declared as National Domestic Violence Awareness Monthin 1989.
Since then, people have used October as a time to acknowledge domestic violence survivors and give a voice to the many victims.
Following with that trend, singer Ashanti took to Instagram to pay tribute to her sister, Kenashia Douglas, who escaped a violent relationship in 2020, but not before suffering bloody injuries at the hands of her abuser.

As part of her tribute, which aims to help others going through a similar situation, the singer and actress (born Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas) shared a series of horrific photos taken of Kenashia’s bruised and battered body, including very graphic images.
The cover image shows her leaning back in a bed with a severely bruised left eye, which was followed by images of serious bruising legs and arms.
There’s also a video highlighting the deep scratch marks all along her neck, and a another video that documents one of the attacks she endured where the abuser can be hear yelling and screaming as he dished beats on her.
‘It is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Words will never be able to express the amount of pain, fury and disgust I feel reliving these moments… but at the same time I am so proud of how strong, courageous, resilient and unbreakable you are,’ Ashanti began in her lengthy post.

Douglas has previously opened up about the violent relationship, but she stopped short of publicly naming her abuser.
On her 31st birthday, Douglas shared a montage video with clips from her childhood up until the present day, and about halfway through the clip she documents the injuries she suffered from her abuser for the very first time.
At the time, it was part of a page called Wife of Creation, a holistic wellness lifestyle brand, that was narrated by Douglas, herself.
Just this week, she posted those very same photos of herself bruised and battered, along with a statement where she shared about her experience being in an abusive relationship.
‘It was dangerous not only for obvious reasons but also because to the outside world everything seemed fine,’ she said in part, adding, ‘It got to a point where the abuse was regular behavior, and I would fight back, pick up whatever I could to protect myself.’
She continued: ‘I look at these pictures and I hold grace and patience for the woman I was and everything she didn’t know! I love her and thank her for her role in my journey,’ she revealed, before adding, ‘I don’t consider myself a victim or a survivor, this is all a part of my story, my life and my journey…’
Her own words: Just this week, Douglas posted those very same photos of herself bruised and battered, along with a statement where she shared about her experience being in an abusive relationship
Dedication: Douglas shard that this post is for ‘any woman or man who has yet to truly recognize the power they possess, and finds themselves in an environment that is unhealthy’
